Question about nexium dosage? my dr just upped me to 40mg of nexium twice daily so thats 80mg a day i forgot to ask and i cant get in touch with him till next week how long in between dosages should it be im suppose to take the first one when i get up and the next one at night..ive been sick so i sleep late i usually take the first pill around 1 how long do i have to wait till next

The Queen Has Spoken replied: "every 12 hours"

lois d replied: "12 hours apart."

puncturelumbar replied: "Nexium has a long half life and you could take both pills at once, however in this case your doctor probably wants you to take it before breakfast and before bedtime. When you take it before breakfast make sure you take it 30 minutes before your first meal. The proton pumps are made in response to food entering the stomach, so if you give the drug time to get in your system they'll all be blocked, increasing your relief. If you take the pill with food, or too close to eating, the drug doesn't have time to get in your bloodstream and the pumps aren't blocked. You can take the second pill anytime, but if you are having heartburn problems after dinner then follow the above advice."

hotdogsarefree replied: "it varies/ take at 1pm/take other one at 8pm/dr has people that take his place call and ask them"

Harmony replied: "I would try to aim for at least 8 hours apart. 12 hrs apart would be best, but might not be practical for your schedule. Try to make taking your medication part of your everyday routine, such as always taking it right before brushing your teeth."

Could I have sleep apnea? I am 5'1" and weigh 120 pounds (healthy weight). Lately when I am falling asleep at night, during the first 30 minutes of sleep I wake up gasping for air, like I've been holding my breath, and I am scared to death. After that I am fine. It only happens once during like the first half hour of sleep. I wonder if this is sleep apnea or a panic attack. I don't recall dreaming when this happens. I also have GERD which I am taking Nexium for, don't know if this is related?

HK3738 replied: "this does not suggest sleep apnea, in it one wakes up multiple times in the night and is tired throughout the day"

Eve replied: "Sounds like it could be either a panic attack or the sleep apnea. I would really ask your doctor. The GERD could be contributing to it too. Someone would have to watch you sleep to really tell you if you stop breathing at some point. They have sleep clinics for that too."

beasleylin replied: "My daughter woke up the same as you, gasping for air. My husband said I held my breath while sleeping and it scared him He would wake me up & tell me to breathe.Dreaming has nothing to do with it. Are you tired when you wake up? As if you didn't rest good? Do you snore? Both are symptoms. Sleep Apnea is a dangerous thing, as you may go to sleep and not breathe. It can cause heart attacks. Best to go see a doctor and find out for sure if this is your problem or if it is something else, Either way, you need to know."

hyre t replied: "Recognize Sleep Apnea"

What should I do about the pain I feel in my esophagus after eating a very big meal? The pain usually start from an hour to several hours after having the meal. I know one cure is to not eat so much at one sitting, but when you're at a buffet, or at a company sponsored event and all the food is free and delicious, I can't control myself. So when I find myself in the situation and I have the pain, which can be so instense sometimes that I am tossing and turning in my bed and can't sleep, what should I do? I've tried over the counter stuff like Prilosec, Maalox, even Nexium. They all don't do anything. Any suggestions?

sshazzam replied: "Welcome to GERD. You need to eat smaller meals throughout the day. Make sure you don't eat for atleast 2 hours before bed."

gillen s replied: "eat slower"

ft3535 replied: "it is called acid reflux and can be dangerous if it continues see a doctor and yes all the ones you mentioned will help"

BiGirl replied: "Sounds like acid reflux. I use OTC medicine. When it's too bad for that, however, I drink water with baking soda. Put about a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of lukewarm water and stir it up. It doesn't taste very good, but it works really well."

kaylah2208 replied: "go to a natural health food store and buy magnesium. i have acid reflux issues and it worked for me. also, you should try zantac. even though the other stuff may not have worked this probably will. when i don't have any medicine, sometimes i'll drink a vanilla shake. vanilla calms heart burn, and the coldness of the shake numbs your throat. vanilla shakes are an easy quick fix."

happyhouse_4576 replied: "Your eating too much and your stomach is trying to keep up with your "buffet". Maybe if you eat slower, you'll feel better."

geminigodess replied: "stop eating so much if u can't control urself bring a man purse along on ur buffet adventures and stick food in there for later u'll never have that feeling again"

Teacherwoman9 replied: "See your doctor for an Rx, but really try just to eat a little portion of each thing you want at the buffet."

merlin_steele replied: "Sounds like you have what I had; GERD If you go do a search on this, you'll get a lot of suggestions, but I'll try to remember them. Don't eat an hour or two before bedtime. Of course don't overeat. Avoid sodas and alcohol. Avoid spicy foods. Avoid chunky tough foods to chew. More importantly, if you want to get rid of this, go to the doctor and get a pre ion. PLUS, this is important. It takes time for this to heal. So if you take a pre ion, be read to take it for a month or so before feeling any effects. I still have this problem occasionally, but the meds really did help."

Tamara J replied: "if it only happens after a big meal..you HAVE to learn some self control....the doctor can give you medication, but he will tell you that smaller portions are the key..and if you think eating big meals is more important..then you are going to continue to have pain.... good luck"

Ewema replied: "It sounds like it could be acid reflux. My mom had it diagnosed by the Dr. and he gave her a pre ion. She takes a small tablet about 30 minutes before a substantial meal and she said it has seemed to help. If it is severe and you don't control it, the acid (bile) can damage the tissue in your esophagus. Also at night try elevating your head, such as using two pillows. This will help keep the acid down."

Once in a blue moon replied: "If you are going to pig out just because it's free, be prepared to sit up all night. Lying in bed makes reflux worse. Go see a doctor. The problem could be causing your esophagus to erode."

Letrice S replied: "You have acid reflux. Put a heaping tablespoon of baking soda and about 2 inches water in a glass. stir well, and drink it all."

cool_person replied: "ENO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! eat slower, chew more, don't chow down.. and if you don't, then see le doctor"

MDMMD replied: "I see that most people are thinking this is GERD. It may very well be. If so others have offered some good advice, namely: Small meals, especially late at night Stay away from caffeine (coffee, tea, colas, chocolate) Stay away from fatty foods Try elevating the head of your bed on bricks or sleep with lots of pillows. Your symptoms could also be resulting from Gallbladder disease. Gallbladder disease can cause symptoms that some confuse with esophageal pain, especially if your symptoms occur a few hours after your meal and are not improved with those strong medications you listed. An ultrasound is usually all you need to see if this could be the cause of your symptoms. Your symptoms could also be from cardiac disease, though if it happens only after a large meal and not necessarily after strenuous exercise this makes coronary disease less likely. An electrocardiogram and a simple blood test while you're having symptoms will help to rule this out. Could be esophageal spasm, which is usually secondary to GERD. Most people with spasm complain of CRUSHING chest pain. My vote...most likely your gallbladder."

silver.graph replied: "Try 1) only eating enough to take care of your hunger, 2) at least three hours before you go to bed, 3) and going light on the meat, fat, and sugar. Getting to be over age 30 and discovering that one can't eat like a teenager without discomfort is just part of the experience. If you still get heartburn or pain with a good-faith effort as above, you may need to see a doctor. If you travel as part of your work, as I do, you will be confronted with hotel food many, many times; it is full of grease, salt, and sugar, far more than most people put in food that they prepare. And very much of it will make you uncomfortable."

answer faerie replied: "stop ignoring what your body is trying to tell you"

Does anyone feel really fatigued when you have bloating gas and indigestion? I got severe pressure and bloating gas, doctor has given me Protonix, Nexium - Protonix seems to make it works. Gas-X works pretty well for me, but I got so fatigued like I just want to go to sleep - what the heck is going on?

rojo_jojo replied: "It could be your gall bladder. I had bloating gas for years before I was diagnosed with gallstones. I also had really bad acid reflux. Both symptoms have greatly decreased since I had my gall bladder removed. You need to pay attention to when you are getting bloated. If it is about 20 minutes after you eat, it could be your gall bladder. All in all, only a doctor can figure out what is wrong. It could be as simple as needing to change your eating habits."

rosieC replied: "I field thru a lot of materials before I finally found this definitive answer to your question.... it's possible to have an existing relationship between bloating, indigesion and fatigue. Digesting Proteins and Starches The way our bodies digest protein versus starches is fundamentally different; therefore you cant consume both in the same meal and have great digestion. According to food combining experts, one of the worst things we can do for our digestive system is combine starches and proteins in the same meal. That means the All-American meal of meat and potatoes is actually bad for us! Why? Proteins and starches are two of the toughest food groups to digest, when combined digestion gets even tougher. This can cause BLOATING, GAS, INDIGESTION, heartburn and more. When we do combine our foods properly, our bodies are able to fully digest what we eat. This allows us to get the most out of our meals, boost energy levels and ease digestion. The end result is less bloating, gas, heartburn, indigestion and a host of other digestive discomforts. Many people have experienced this on a personal basis and know of even more who have changed the way the feel in a matter of days, with basic food combining. Unsuitable Digestive Environment Proteins and starches both need a specific digestive environment in order to be digested well. Proteins digest the best when the acid levels of the stomach are higher. Starches digest best when the alkaline levels are higher. When you ingest proteins and starches together the digestive environment is unable to get either acidic enough or alkaline enough to properly digest both food groups. When this occurs, neither the proteins nor the starches are absorbed well, which means you are not getting the necessary nutrients from either. Improper absorption can lead to a number of different digestive and health problems such as; INDIGESTION, BLOATING, GAS, FATIGUE, high cholesterol, weight gain, and more. Carbohydrates vs. Starches Often time's starches and carbohydrates are considered the same, however there is a distinct difference. A starch is a carbohydrate that has low or no water content; i.e. breads and potatoes. All starches are carbohydrates but not all carbohydrates are starches. Foods like fruit are considered a carbohydrate because of their high sugar content but they are not a starch because of their high water content. The higher the water content in food the easier it is to digest. Before you can do your best to avoid protein and starch food combinations, you need to be able to identify which is which. In order to help, we have created two extra columns in our daily fiber chart. Look for a check mark in the protein or starch column to indicate which group it belongs to. If there is no check mark - the food is a vegetable and can be eaten with either a starch or a protein in the same meal. Food Combining in Today's World Not combining proteins and starches is good in theory but it may seem like an overwhelming task. After-all, our meals usually consist of a protein, starch, and fruit or veggie. This leaves many asking what would a meal consist of? The problem is most of us think eating three square meals a day with over-sized portions is eating healthy. In reality this makes it very difficult not to combine proteins and starches. Improper food combining and over eating make it hard for your digestive system to fully digest your meal. Undigested food is the root of our digestive ailments. Instead of three "square" meals, we should be eating smaller portions five to six times a day. This allows you to work in both proteins and starches without combining the two, eat smaller portions, and limit your hunger pains. The end result is more complete digestion and fewer digestive problems. Here is a sample daily eating schedule: Breakfast - omelet with vegetables or meat Snack- Granola Baror fruit or cereal Lunch- salad with chicken or tuna Snack- crackers or yougurt or pretzel Dinner- chicken, met or fish and vegetables Snack- popcorn or fruit We have incorporated protein into the breakfast, lunch and dinner eating times. Proteins are more convenient to have during those times of day and you can always add vegetables to them for a good food combination. Whenever you are eating you should pay attention to your portion sizes. They should never be bigger than the size of your closed fist. Eating this way will help you avoid overeating, stave off hunger pains, and bad food combinations. My husband and I both take Gas-X(simethicone) to relieve severe abdominal cramps, indigestion and bloating. Remember that eating a high fat diet may also cause sludging of the blood and thus fatigue. Known causes of indigestion (dyspepsia) are GERD, gallbladder disease, pancreatitis and gastroparesis. and the following factors: -Eating too much, eating too fast, eating high-fat foods or eating during stressful situations ( stomach acids tend to increase during stress thus causing bloating and gas. -Drinking too much alcohol -Cigarette smoking -Stress and fatigue A point to consider: cancer cells like to thrive in an acidic environment. Note the correlation of stress to many diseases including cancer Increase your fiber gradually to avoid any painful bloating and gas Ninety percent of your daily fiber should come from the foods that you eat and the other ten percent can come from a fiber supplement. Increase your water intake so you are getting half of your body weight in ounces daily. After cleansing a high fiber diet will preserve the positive results of cleansing by producing a more productive bowel movement. Insoluble Fiber passes through the intestines completely in tact and is responsible for preventing constipation, removing toxic waste from the colon, and balancing the acidity in the intestines. Soluble Fiber binds with fatty acids lowering total cholesterol and reducing the risk of heart disease. It also slows down the absorption of sugar which helps to regulate blood sugar in those with diabetes. Carbohydrates vs. Starches To get the best results from your cleansing process we recommend that you dont mix starches with proteins during cleansing. These food groups are the hardest to digest and it takes different digestive fluids to break them down. When combined, the digestive fluids partially neutralize each other preventing total digestion, which leads to bloating, gas, constipation, etc. Often times starches and carbohydrates are considered the same, however there is a difference. To help you identify the difference weve listed some important tips below. All starches are carbohydrates but not all carbohydrates are starches. A starch is a carbohydrate that has low or no water content; i.e. breads and potatoes Foods like fruit are considered a carbohydrate because of their high sugar content but they are not a starch because of their high water content. The higher the water content in food the easier it is to digest. An interesting question. Thanks for the learning opportunity"

JD replied: "I have had the same problems. My Doctor wound up giving me a Colonoscopy test. Turn out I had a benign hemorrhoid that was treated with medication. Before the tests I was uncomfortably bloated and had abdominal pain and gas pain, and was tired 100% of the time.. My doctor prescribed Zantac and suggested I take Simethicone tablets (OTC) for the gas (Works better and faster than GasX). Both worked extremely well and with a few adjustments in diet (limited dairy and acid intake) I fell fine now instead of wanting to take a 3 hour nap in mid-afternoon like before."

Taking Nexium and getting tired? I have a question about Nexium. I have been reading alot of stories from others using Nexium, I have been taking Nexium since 2004 and now tired all the time. lightheaded sometimes. I know that I have heard that Nexium you need to take b12 .I was oof Nexium for 4 days and didn't have any tiredness. I know I am under alot of stress and don't sleep good at night. I am a night person and like to stay up till 3:00am . we just had the storm IKE here in Houston. thanks

Ariana Z replied: "It sounds like you need to boost your diet with a vitamin supplement. Especially if you are under stress, you will benefit greatly from just taking a daily women's tablet and maybe even boost your Vitamin C intake as well. Cut back on caffeine and sugars, that will help with a deeper sleep at night as well."

Optimist replied: "The problem with PPI's such as Nexium is that they may block a chemical known as intrinsic factor from being released from your parietal cells in your stomach. Why is intrinsic factor important? It is needed for the absorption of B12 in the distal ilium. Without intrinsic factor, absorption of B12 is almost none which could lead to pernicious anemia. You can test whether B12 deficiency is the problem by getting an IM injection of B12. Then you should address the cause of your symptoms that lead the doctor to prescribe you the PPI."

Has anyone taken Nexium for heartburn while pregnant? Did it make you sick to the stomach? ? I have horrible heartburn and my doctor prescribed Nexium for it. (I am 26 weeks) Bu tit says one of the possible side effects is nausea. I am afraid that it will make me vomit in my sleep. This happened to me 2 nights ago (did not take it that night), I vomited in my sleep and I breathed it into my lungs and woke up choking. Needless to say it was very unpleasant and I do not want this to happen again. So have any of you taken Nexium and if so what if any side effects did you get? Thanks

Susan replied: "hi, i have not taking that, but i am 37 weeks gone and i get really bad heartburn have done all the way through, and the only thing i can take to stop it is yazoo strawberry milkshake, everything else makes me sick."

Jaison w replied: "I have been on nexium for 4 years and I had 2 son and Im 20 weeks now and it works wonders for me I live by it lol!!!! try it you may see that it fixes your problem, good luck"

I have been taking NEXIUM for 3 months now, and have been having this problem.? I had been taking NEXIUM for 3 months now (5 boxes) because of some virus in my stomach. After taking it for 3 months, doctor said i should stop since the virus is gone. A few days later, something new occurred, every morning while i'm still sleeping, a feeling of hot air would come out of my nose and it will not stop if i don't react to it and suck it in. I know this sounds weird but i am really scared. My doctor prescribe another type of medicine which should stop this but has not. Now its been 9 months now but i still have it. The feeling is like hot air but there is no air. It comes out from the nose and to stop this i would have to breath in from my nose to stop it. This only occurs in the morning. And it comes back every 10-15 minutes. I am 43 year old and is there anyway i can stop this? I am very tired from not getting enough sleep.

Glossy Lips replied: "Have you tried calling your doctor to change that medication? You need to talk to your doctor and see what he/she recommends if not you could get a second opinion..."

Can you take nexium acid tablets whilst pregnant? Does anyone know or has anyone ever taken acid tablets whilst pregnant, i am currently 7 weeks pregnant and suffering from really bad acid in constant pain in my stomach and can't eat or sleep with the irritation in my throat i know its acid i have taken gaviscon but it doesn' t help, i used to take nexium before i was pregnant as i was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia and have had bad problems with it before don't want to take anything that would harm my baby. I have an appointment to see my doc to ask him just wondered if anyone else has taken them.

Jennifer O replied: "I had really bad acid reflux and heartburn when I was pregnant and I don't know about the nexium but I took liquid maalox and it helped it alot. Good luck."

risac replied: "I have really bad acid reflux and my doctor prescribed me 150mgs of ranitidine. My doctor said it is perfectly safe to take while pregnant , though you should still ask your doctor"

Bad Heartburn Problems, Don't know what to say anymore....(Nexium)? Im 18 and i have had heartburn for quite a long time so i already know something must be screwed up in me but w/e. what im wondering is that if i take Nexium 40mg for however many years, will it actually heal me or am i dependent on the stuff till the day i die? The Dr. tried booking me to go to the hospital so they can do tests but im not very comfortable with the fact that they need to put me to sleep for this....last time i was put out i was like 6 and had a seizure or something lol. is there anything i can do to help my heart burn (other then baking soda cuz it does crap.) and nexium is getting expensive, thanks everyone!

1 replied: "try vinegar in water 1 tbs in 8 oz"

DLS replied: "I'd try the calcium carbonate products over the counter first (Tums, Rolaids). At 18 it will increase your calcium and help the heartburn. But doc is right to be concerned. My hubby's friend was 30 when he died of stomach cancer that everyone thought was heartburn-with no family history. You most likely don't have cancer-but if you did-tums wouldn't help. Nexium is a long term answer for heartburn uncontrolled by the simpler answers. Zantac is the next line of fire and now it can be obtained over the counter too. Nexium should be a later effort of control. Stay away from spicy foods and greasy foods (as much as an 18 yr old can!) They may increase your heartburn. Being overweight also contributes and eating too much at one time also pushes the acid from your stomach into your esophagus. Finally, don't lay down after eating. good luck to ya!"

marshall y replied: "Your heartburn pain is caused by either an infection, a tumour, or GERD. See: This will answer your question far better then I can. Print off the report and take it to your doctor."

I have been taking lipitor and it causes terrilble gas and abdominal pain - what else can I use? I have called my dr. and waiting for him to call back. Can't sleep at night from the terrible pain and diarreha. I had stent put in right artery one month ago, thus the mega 80mgs of lipitor. Taking Plavix also. Would Nexium taken right now help the damage that the lipitor caused? What else can I do right now to stop the pain and the diarreha? Have never had this kind of pain before and it scares me. Would appreciate any help from you. I have posted before and have gotten good advice. thank you.

Say replied: "Nexium is not a "fast acting" drug. So it will not give you immediate relief. Are you eating fatty foods with the Lipitor? That is the most common cause of those side effects. Maybe the Dr needs to lower your dose."

Billie77 replied: "Imodium tablets - take two every time you have a bowel movement will stop the diarrhea. The supplement , "red rice yeast" will take down cholesterol levels as good as any medical drug, two capsules twice daily. There are no side effects. Also metamucil and lecithin will reduce cholesterol levels. Try these and I can guarantee there are no negative side effects."

the_only_solorose replied: "Lipitor is not the only antilipemic out there, just stop taking it, and ask your doctor for a different one."

mom of 2 replied: "I am so sorry you don't feel well, and especially on top of having your stent put in. But I have been on Lipitor for several years now and have never had this side effect from it, and I have irritable bowel syndrome where everything bothers me. So I'm wondering if it's really the Lipitor or just that your body is under stress right now from everything that's going on. You may even have eaten something that didn't agree with you. Or maybe the Lipitor and the Plavix don't work well together for you. So I would not take any more meds till you talk to your dr. You don't know for sure what's causing this and you don't want to make it worse. Try calling your pharmacy and ask if they can recommend anything. Try using a warm heating pad on your belly, that may make it feel better. Have some hot herbal tea and watch some TV to distract yourself. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. I hope you feel better soon."
